by

Since time immemorial, teak (Lat. Tectona grandis) is considered a sacred tree in many Southeast Asian cultures. The reason for the tree’s special status originates from the ancient animist belief system, which features a wide variety of nature spirits. Thus, it is believed, that the teak tree is the dwelling place of a mystical khodam spirit. Teak wood, therefore, is said to be naturally imbued with the mystical properties of the khodam spirit which resides in the sacred tree. Due to the spiritual powers of the khodam spirit, teak wood emits auspicious energies and blessings. Teak wood is thus considered holy wood.

However, it requires an adept spiritual master to obtain this type of holy wood. Indeed, before the tree can be cut the dukun first needs to ask permission from the khodam spirit. Failing to do so, for whatever reason, can insinuate a series of bad events to befall the person who cut the tree, including his or her family members. Hence, in order to avoid situations of bad luck, it is extremely important that the dukun knows how to perform the proper ritual to convince the khodam spirit of the merit and virtue accrued by the use of its wood for the making of mystical objects, such as amulets and talismans. Traditionally, the authentic dukun has inherited the ritual knowledge from his or her ancestors.
